Do QR codes expire? Check the image, link and service separately
A QR image has no universal countdown. It stores data, but the action that data requests can become unavailable. A readable ticket code may refer to an expired ticket; a working scan may open a deleted page. Identify which layer failed before replacing the artwork.
Three separate lifetimes
- The image: a saved pattern remains the same unless edited, damaged or degraded. A reader must still be able to decode it.
- The content: a URL, password, contact number or access token can become outdated or invalid.
- The service: a website or redirect provider depends on continuing hosting, domain control, configuration and any relevant account terms.
Static and dynamic describe how the destination is managed
A static image directly stores its payload. That may be text, Wi-Fi details or a URL. A managed “dynamic QR” normally stores a stable URL whose forwarding destination can be changed in a service dashboard. The printed pattern itself is still fixed.
Do not classify a code solely from its domain or link length. Your own domain can redirect, and a third-party URL can be a direct content address. Inspect the decoded URL and, where appropriate, the redirect configuration or provider account. Avoid opening unknown links just to investigate them.
Compare the dependencies, not just the subscription label
- Direct text or contact data can be read without fetching a webpage if the reader supports the format. Using a phone, email or Wi-Fi action still depends on the corresponding device and service.
- A direct website URL depends on the website. It can contain analytics parameters or open a page that collects usage data; static does not mean untracked.
- A managed redirect adds a forwarding dependency. Editing features, reporting, scan limits and cancellation behaviour depend on the provider’s actual terms. Neither a fee nor a lifetime guarantee follows from the QR format.
Example: keep one menu address under your control
A restaurant could encode https://example.com/menu, then update the page when dishes change. If the document moves, the site owner can maintain that address and route it to the new document. The image has not been edited; the website behind the address has.
Keep a record of who renews the domain, maintains hosting and can update that route. These services can have ongoing costs. Test from a signed-out phone after a change, and provide a readable address as a fallback. Website visit reports estimate traffic, not an exact count of camera scans: copied links, previews, blocked analytics and repeat visits can affect counts.
Find what stopped working
- If the camera shows no result, investigate image quality, focus and the clear border using the scanning troubleshooting guide.
- If it reads the expected URL but the site fails, check the page, access permissions, domain and hosting.
- If a redirect shows an account or deactivation notice, inspect the provider’s account and published terms. Do not assume payment is the only cause or only solution.
- If a ticket, password or invitation is rejected, ask the responsible service about that credential’s validity. Reprinting the same data cannot extend its validity.
- For changed Wi-Fi credentials or contact details, create a new payload and replace obsolete copies.
Common questions
Do eToolPlus codes have a built-in expiry?
The generator creates static payloads without adding its own managed forwarding service. It does not guarantee that a destination, network or external account remains available.
Can I update a code already printed?
You cannot replace the stored bytes in that copy. If its URL belongs to a site you control, you may be able to update the content or maintain a redirect there. Otherwise generate and distribute a replacement.
Does a successful image check test the website?
No. It compares decoded data with the input. Check destination access and the real user action separately.
